Ultimate Budget Solo Travel Guide to Hogenakkal Falls from Bangalore
My Amazing One-Day Solo Trip
Last Sunday, I decided not to waste my day at home doing nothing. Instead, I planned a refreshing one-day solo trip to Hogenakkal Falls, one of South India’s most beautiful waterfalls, located in Dharmapuri district on the border of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Only 125 km from Bangalore, this hidden gem is perfect for nature lovers and budget travelers who want a quick escape without taking office leave.
In this article, I will share my entire experience, including how to reach Hogenakkal Falls from Bangalore, things to do, budget travel tips, and a detailed cost breakdown – so you can plan your trip easily.
🚂 How to Reach Hogenakkal Falls from Bangalore
I started my journey early in the morning. At 6:00 AM, I boarded a train from SMVT Bangalore Railway Station. The ticket cost was very affordable – only ₹95. The train ride was peaceful, with scenic views of rural Karnataka.
By 8:40 AM, I arrived at Dharmapuri Railway Station. From there, it was just a 1.5 km walk to Dharmapuri Bus Stand. Along the way, I enjoyed a simple but delicious breakfast – idli with chutney and sambhar – costing me ₹50, along with a cup of tea for ₹10.
🚌 Cheap and Convenient Bus to Hogenakkal Falls
The changing landscapes along the way, from villages to dense green forests, made the ride scenic. By 11:00 AM, I reached the Hogenakkal Bus Stand.
🌾 Finger Millet Drink – A Healthy Local Specialty
Right after getting down from the bus, I tried the local Finger Millet Drink (Ragi Koozh) for ₹20. It was so healthy and refreshing, a perfect pick-me-up before exploring the falls.
🌊 Hogenakkal Falls – India’s Own Niagara
A short 400-meter walk from the bus stand brought me to the breathtaking Hogenakkal Falls. Known as the “Niagara of South India”, it’s where the Kaveri River enters Tamil Nadu, forming beautiful waterfalls. Despite being crowded on Sunday, the raw beauty of the place was not affected.
The sound of water gushing and the fresh air were soul-soothing. I spent time clicking photos, talking to locals, and admiring the natural landscape.

🚣 Parisal (Coracle) Ride – Ideal for Group Travel
Though I didn’t take the Parisal (Coracle) Ride as I was solo, I must recommend it if you’re visiting with friends or family.
-
Parisal Ride Cost: ₹1500 per ride
-
Capacity: Maximum of 4 people
-
Per Person Cost in Group: ₹1500 ÷ 4 = ₹375 per person
The ride lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes, with vendors selling fresh fish fry and snacks onboard.
Travel Tip: The best time for Parisal rides is May. Avoid monsoon as rides are not available then due to safety reasons.
💆♂️ Oil Massage Experience – Relax and Rejuvenate
After spending time at the falls, I went for an oil massage. It cost ₹500, and the local masseuses performed a relaxing job that relieved my tired body perfectly. I highly recommend this for all solo and group travelers visiting Hogenakkal Falls.

🏠 The Return Journey – Back to Bangalore
At 3:30 PM, I boarded the bus back to Dharmapuri and reached there by 5:15 PM. Then, I took a bus from Dharmapuri bus stand back to Bangalore, reaching home by 11:00 PM. Though the day was long, it was fully worth it.
